Sweater Vests
Sweater Vests for Women
As a kid, growing up in the 1990s, I enjoyed the vest trend. The vests of the 1990s all had floral prints, where now the sweater vests are often more solid in color. That just means that there is more that I can do with womens sweater vests, now. Whether it is a tight sweater vest or a little loose, I prefer to wear them over a tight t-shirt to give my torso some definition. If the v-neck is low enough or it is an open sweater vest, I might put it over a graphic tee.
The Sweater Vest for Men
Sweater vests have been popular with men for the whole time. Many men just need a little extra warmth around the middle. A sweater vest is practical for sports because it leaves the arms free. Many football coaches and sports players like Tiger Woods have popularized the sweater vest.
If you are confident in your fashion sense, you can find all sorts of occasions for the sweatervests. It will look great over a t-shirt with a pair of jeans. It is great to wear to church. Don't be pinned to old vest patterns with overlapping diamonds. Plain colored sweater vests are the easiest to wear with a variety of clothes.
Sweater Vest for Kids
Sweater vests for kids have never gone out of style. In fact, sweater vests for boys are almost a right of passage. Every mom has a picture of their little boy in a sweater vest on the way to church on Easter. But now sweater vests are actually fun for kids. Having character sweater vests with favorite Disney characters will make any kid love their sweater vest. Of course, many parents opt to just save them for Easter anyway.
What is the difference between a diamond sweater vest and an argyle sweater vest?
There probably is not a real difference at all. An argyle sweater vest had a diamond pattern. Some will have a pattern on the front, and others will have the diamond pattern going all of the way around the sweater vest. A diamond sweater vest may or may not be referring to the argyle pattern. sometimes on childrens sweater vests you will see a column of three diamonds going down the front of the vest. It is quite possible that this is a diamond sweater vest.
Why are Patagonia down sweater vests so expensive?
The Patagonia down sweater vest is not really a sweater vest at all. I've not sure why they market it as a sweater vest. It is more of a sleeveless coat. It is a heavy sweater vest that provides a lot of warmth to the torso and upper body. A full down coat would restrict the movement of the wearer's arms so it would not be as appropriate for athletic activities. The down vest, on the other hand, give you plenty of freedom of movement.
It is expensive because it is very high quality. If you read some of the reviews on it, you see it is highly practical and well made. Also, it carries the Patagonia name, which means something to a lot of people.
What is a club room sweater vest?
Club room is a clothing brand that makes sweater vests. You will see some other brands calling their sweater vests club room sweater vests. Club room vests have two distinct characteristics. They are tapered at the bottom. Sometimes the tapering at the bottom makes the rest of the sweater vest baggy, and sometimes it just makes the whole thing look fitted. They also have a high v-neck line. If a man were to wear a club room sweater vest with a tie and collared shirt, not much of the tie would be showing at all, like Andy on "The Office."
How do I look casual in a sweater vest?
The best way to make a sweater vest look casual is to pair it with casual clothes. It is true that many people wear sweater vests to make their clothes look a little more formal, but it doesn't have to be that way. generally, a baggy sweater vest looks more casual than a fitted sweater vest. Patterned (non-argyle) sweater vests also look more casual than solid colored.
The most casual look for a sweater vest is with jeans and a t-shirt. No one will think you are dressing up with this combo. If you want a clean cut look for a guy, wear nice sneakers. For women, you can pair the sweater vest with any number of shoes. For heels, choose a cork wedge; or ballet flats work just as well for the lovers of flats. Of course, you too can just wear a nice pair of sneakers. You don't want to wear ratty, old sneakers with a sweater vest because it looks like you don;t know how to dress. Otherwise, be creative and have some fun.
Is there really a National Sweater Vest Day?
There are several takes on the existence of a National Sweater Vest Day. The first known occurrence of a National Sweater Vest Day was when a small group of scientists, who work for the Federal government all wore sweater vests to play a joke on a co-worker. They declared it National Sweater Vest Day in their morning briefing, but nothing officially came of it. The exact date of that event is unknown.
The International Sweater Vestival also started in 2007. It is an annual event. It is scheduled each year for the second Friday after Thanksgiving. It was dubbed a "Vestival" by Carolyn Johnson, of the Boston Globe. Although it is called an "international" holiday, it seems to be geared toward the Boston area. Their website has yet to start the preperations for the 2010 holiday, but we are eagerly anticipating that event. They have a video of their 2009 event if you are looking for some inspiration.
In 2008, in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, a National Sweater Vest Day took place. It seemed to get a lot of response from the locals and was supposed to occur on the second Friday of October every year. However, planning for the 2009 event never was completed, and the event seemed to have fizzled out after only one year. You can see a slideshow of sweater vest wearers from that year. It begs the question: have they forgotten the sweater vest?
Which day should you celebrate? To day be official, I would go with the Boston event, which is still ongoing and has had a track record of being dependable. However, you don't need a sweater vest to wear a sweater vest. Any day when you put on a shirt and feel that it is too cold, but not warm enough for a full sweater should become sweater vest day to you.
What is the official name for the fear of the sweater vest?
This one baffles me. I know of no official name for a sweater vest phobia. However, there is a Fear the Sweater Vest clothing line put out by MuckFichigan.net. They do not sell any sweater vests. Considering the popularity of their clothes, it is surprising that there is no official phobia of fear of sweater vests. Let me put a word together for you.
There is no Latin word for sweater, since they did not have sweaters in ancient Rome, but the word for "vest" is thorax, thoracis. So, a fear of vests would be thoraciphobia. If you try to use this word in conversation to sound smart, someone smarter than you will Google it and learn that it was made up by me, but you can try it.
What fabric is best for a tennis sweater vest?
Jersey knit sweater vests are the fabric of choice for tennis sweater vests. Jersey is generally knit from cotton or a blend of cotton and synthetics. It has up to a 25% stretch in it. For any sport where you could use a little extra heat, a jersey sweater vest is the right choice. Some say it is the perfect summer sweater vest, but I find it a tad too insulating. A lighter knit cotton would do well, though.

You can find lots of old school and vintage sweater vests. Many people claim the old school sweater vests are easier to find than new sweater vests. Many will clearly be home-knit sweater vests that were given as Christmas gifts. You can also look on ebay, but sometimes people charge silly prices for clothes, so you may or may not get a good deal.
If you are looking for a new sweater vest in a vintage style, there are a few things to look for. An argyle or diamond patterned sweater vest is considered old school by many. You will want a v-neck that is close to the collar. No low dipping v-necks. Also, you will want the vest to taper around the waist. these will ensure an old school look for you.
It is difficult to find vintage women's sweater vests because they have been a man's garment for so many decades. Now, ladies sweater vests are dominating the markets, but not so much in classic cuts. If a woman is looking for a traditional sweater vest, it may be best to just purchase sweater vests for men.
Are all sweater vests sleeveless?
Technically, in order to be a vest, all sweater vests must be sleeveless. A vest is defined as a sleeveless garment. However, some edgy designers are pushing out the shoulders of sweater vests so that a little bit of fabric is hanging over the arm on girls sweater vests. If they push this trend too far, their garment will no longer be considered a designer sweater vest. Thankfully, the definition of vest is not fluid and designers cannot push it around at their whim. The sweater vest has always been and will always remain a sleeveless sweater.

Where can I find replacements for my sweater vest buttons?
If you have a button up sweater vest and have lost or one or more buttons, you have a few options. Some manufacturers sew a spare or two onto the tag of the garment or on some other inconspicuous location. The first place to look is there. Some people will take these off right when they get their garments and add them to their sewing collections. If you or your wife are in the habit of doing this, check your sewing basket. If there is no spare, you have an alternative. You can buy buttons, but you will want to replace them all so that they match. the most important thing is size. if you get buttons that are too big, they you will not be able to button the sweater vest. If you get buttons that are too small, they will always come loose. The color does not matter as much. You can aim for the exact color of the sweater vest or get a complimentary color. You will need to replace all of the buttons so that they match, but you will want to buy spares in case you go through this dilemna again.
Do I have to wear the snowflake sweater vest my Aunt Mary made for me at Christmas?
Christmas sweater vests are notoriously ugly. Aunt Mary's are notoriously out of touch. As many times as you put in a request for a skull sweater vest, she returns with snowflakes and mittens plastered all over that sweater vest. Are you obligated to wear it?
It depends on your ethical stance and how much you love your Aunt Mary. Personally, my take is that just because someone gives me something does not mean that I am obligated to store it in my closet for the rest of my life. I will donate something I don't like the next day, but some people call me a cold hearted bitch.
If I wanted Aunt Mary to think I loved it (and thus encourage her to give me ugly Christmas sweater vests every Christmas) I would take her out to lunch, wearing it. When she asked if I liked it, I would pretend like I had forgotten that she had given it to me, and say that I wore it all the time. If I were a guy, I would even say that the ladies love it. I would then spend lunch developing a more meaningful relationship with Aunt Mary, since that is the point of such lunches, not to deceive her into thinking I am a fan of her knitting.
A more honest approach would work better in the long run. If you can't be straightforward, continue to insist on a skull sweater vest if you don't like it. Or, put it on the dog, saying you thought she had made a dog sweater vest for Fido. She won't make you any more sweater vests after that.
Can I make a custom sweater vest?
Yes! There are two ways to make a custom sweater vest. Fist, you can knit your own. You can get a free sweater vest pattern to work with. One woman even made a Mario Brothers sweater vest and has published the pattern. You can customize the sweater vest any way that you want.
If you don't know how to knit, you can also cut the arms off of a regular sweater. You will want to be careful not to cut the sweater fabric, but just the thread that holds the arm to the "sweater vest." You will want to loosely hem along the arm holes so that they do not unravel. You will want a baggy, v-neck sweater to work from.
I am an XXL. Do they make sweater vests in that size?
Why yes they do.
Can my dog and/or cat wear sweater vests?
Absolutely! You can often find sweater vests in pet stores. Unfortunately, there seems to be much more variety for dogs than for cats, maybe because dogs are more agreeable about putting them on. You can also knit your own cat sweater vest or dog sweater vest with patterns.
Are sweater vests good clothes for work?
Sweater vests are excellent for work. For men, they automatically make anything that you are wearing a little dressier. They are suitable under a jacket or could be worn alone, depending on your climate and weather. Most modern womens sweater vests tend to be a little more on the casual side. You can still wear them to work, but understand that they will not have the same dressing up effect as they will for men. With a pencil skirt and posh blouse, you can't go wrong.
