When Do You Need Shower Inserts?

If you are living in your home, and you notice that the wall or tiling around the shower and in the the shower is beginning to deteriorate, you may choose a shower insert over re tiling. If you are trying to sell your home, if and the tiling does not look up to par, a shower insert will do the trick for all of those open houses you are about to face.

Basically, you need a shower insert when you need to to redo your shower walls, but cannot afford to retile if room. It is also a great project for a beginner do-it yourselfer. Then, if it needs to be redone in a decade or so, you will be ready for tiling.

One Pieced or Many Shower Inserts

In choosing a shower insert, you have the choice between one piece or many pieces. A one piece insert is seamless. You will never have to worry about having grimes stuck in the corners. However the big downside is that it is extremely difficult to deliver and bring into your bathroom. Unless you have a very small shower stall, this will be a gruesome thing to do.

If the other option is getting your shower in start to insert in pieces. You would be getting the floor and wall pieces. You would then install them yourself and grout the edges so that grime did not collect too excessively.

Shower Insert Material Options

Your basic options are plastic, acrylic, and fiberglass. They are all plastic based materials with varying pros and cons.

The plastic you will get will be the same kind of plastic as is used for the outside of boats. It is very strong and durable. However, it is the most prone to mold and mildew.

Acrylic is a lighter weight plastic. It is water resistant, but chips and cracks a little too easily. You can get an acrylic paste to fix the cracks and chips.

Fiberglass is the most durable of all. It is heavy, water resistant, and a good insulator. By far, a fiberglass insert is the best option for shower inserts. It's one that drawback is that it is by far the most expensive.

What About Style

As with any other feature in home design, the outcome of a shower insert project depends largely on you. If you are willing to spend a little bit of extra money to get quality material and even a custom design, you can have a beautiful looking insert like the one pictured. A lot of the design of your shower insert, along with anything else in your home, has to do with your own sense of style. Think about what you like and how much you can afford and go from there. This is not something you want to be cheap about, because if you are, you will just have to buy a shower insert again.

How to Find Shower Inserts Online

Finding shower inserts online can be tricky, especially if you are typing in "shower inserts." I found a great retailer, eFaucets, with and excellent selection.

eFaucets is actually the largest online retailer of kitchen and bath supplies. It has over 150 brands to sell, including the popular Delta, Moen, and Kohler. Because it is such a large retailer, it can offer the lowest prices and free shipping.

But if you type in "shower inserts" you'll get nothing. For walls, type in "shower walls" or "shower wall kit," for doors, type in "shower doors," or "shower enclosures" and for the floor, type in "shower tray." Sometimes the door and the tray will come as a set, which is ideal because you want the tray to line up with the door so that no water leaks onto the floor.

Likewise, individually do a search for the shower head and the rest of the hardware. If you are looking to find a "shower kit," you can get all of the hardware in one set, which will simplify things for yourself.
