You may be thinking that there is nothing within this price range for laptops that will meet your needs. Think again! Laptops are becoming more and more powerful. As the technology becomes more widely available, the lower the price goes. I would not call these cheap laptops under $500, but they are definitely less expensive than one would expect for all that they do.

This laptop comes with 4GB memory, which is a decent size for the average user. You could happily keep a full iTunes without a problem with speed as well as play the most up to date online games. It runs on a 64 bit Windows 7 operating system, so it is very user friendly. It has a built in webcam for your video chat and conferencing needs. The screen is 15.6" and the batter will last 3.5 hours on a full charge with moderate use. As with all laptops, the battery will wear out faster if you use it for more intense activities, like gaming or watching movies. This is a solid choice for a laptop under $500

This Compaq Presario comes standard with only 3MB of ram, but with the option to upgrade, so it is not that big of a deal. Most people won't need more than 3MB, but if you do, an upgrade won't cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, you'll still be under budget for laptops under $500. Some have found the battery life to be a little lacking, but with any laptop, your mileage will vary.

This Toshiba also operates on a Windows 7 operating system. There is really nothing that you can't so with this, as it is a fast little machine. Some complaints that I have heard about were the speakers. It is hard to place speakers on laptops and the best way to get decent sound from any computers is with separate speakers or a headset, but I digress. The other problem was that there were only 2 USB ports. This I don't understand, nor do I agree with it. My PC has six USB ports and my tiny netbook has three. I don't think I could honestly manage with two. Still, this is a fine laptop for under $500.

This may be the most high end laptop under $500. This laptop is originally priced at around $550, and for good reason, but you can get it refurbished at Amazon for about $100 off. It will not come with instructions, so you'll want to look up a manual online. This is the one I recommend to anyone a little tech savvy who is willing to learn their computer inside and out without the paper manual. This is what I would choose for a laptop under 500 dollars.
